TL;DR: A terminal operator does not replace its Terminal Operating System with Salesforce. The TOS owns the box: yard, gate, vessel and equipment moves. Salesforce owns everyone who talks to the terminal and everything that happens around the move, which is contracts and tariffs, service requests and claims, equipment as maintained assets, and the portals that shipping lines and hauliers actually log into. Getting that boundary right is the whole design problem.
A Terminal Operating System exists to control the movement and storage of cargo in and around a port or marine terminal. It covers vessel operations, yard management, gate operations, equipment coordination, inventory and the rail and road interfaces. It is the operational system of record and nothing should displace it.
What it was never built for is the commercial and relationship layer around those moves:
Those are CRM problems wearing operational clothing, and they are where a platform earns its place.
Three groups, in the order most operators should adopt them.
Shipping line and forwarder accounts, rate cards and tariff negotiation, quotes for ancillary services such as storage, reefer plugs, weighing and inspections, renewals, and property or tenancy management for land and sheds. None of this touches operations, which is exactly why it is the safest place to start.
One queue for gate disputes, damage claims, booking exceptions, documentation chasing and demurrage questions, with real service levels attached. Most terminals run this from shared mailboxes and a phone rota today, which is why nobody can answer how long a claim actually takes.
Cranes, reach stackers, straddle carriers, reefer points and gate lanes modelled as assets with a real hierarchy, then work orders, preventive maintenance plans, and field scheduling for the crews who do the work. This is asset lifecycle management, and it is where a terminal usually finds the fastest unglamorous savings.
One rule keeps these programmes out of trouble: the TOS stays the system of record for the move, and Salesforce holds the reference, not the copy.
In practice that means an event-driven integration rather than a nightly table sync. Gate-in and gate-out, vessel arrival and departure, equipment fault codes and reefer alarms arrive as events. Salesforce keeps the identifier, the status and the business context, then deep links back into the TOS for operational detail. Container-level inventory does not belong in CRM objects: it is high volume, it changes constantly, and nobody makes a commercial decision from a stale copy of it.
The same pipe carries the useful automation. An equipment fault event can open a case, triage it against the maintenance history, and create a work order with the right skill and the right part before a supervisor has read the alarm.
More than most operators expect, because it removes work rather than moving it. A portal for shipping lines, hauliers, tenants and customs brokers can carry slot and appointment requests, invoice and dispute status, document exchange, and damage reports with photos attached at the source.

Should container data be synced into Salesforce?
Only the references and statuses that drive a business decision. Full container-level inventory belongs in the TOS with a deep link from the CRM record.
